Southport (Away) Match preview 01-02-2014

Iron take to the road this weekend to face a new look Southport side at the Merseyrail Community stadium. After winning their first game of 2014 against Nuneaton, the Sandgrounders could only add one further point when meeting bottom of the table Hyde. They have since gone on to suffer losses against Hereford, Wrexham and Barnet, which has seen them slip to 22nd place.

Southport manager John Coleman has used the transfer window to shake up his squad, most recently bringing in midfielder Gary O’Neill on loan from Port Vale.  He will be looking to make his home debut at the first opportunity after appearing against Barnet last weekend. Coleman has released Chris Almond and Brie Irie Bi just a day before the end of the window as he looks to turn the clubs fortunes, adding to a host of changes in personnel during the window following his appointment in December.

Having played just one game in January, Iron sit eleven points above Southport with four games in hand. Loan signing Bernard Mensah will be hoping to make his second appearance this weekend after coming on as a substitute in Iron’s only outing against Woking since joining in the current window.

Iron took all three points from the corresponding fixture at the Amlin earlier in the season with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Sean Marks strike. Braintree have found joy at the Merseyrail Community stadium in recent years, having won 2-0 last season, and recording an impressive 4-0 win in the 2011/12 season. Sean Marks will be looking forward to this fixture in particular, having scored five goals in the last five meets between the two sides,  only failing to net in a 0-0 two seasons ago.

Macclesfield Town (Home) Preview 28-01-2014

Iron welcome ex-football league outfit Macclesfield Town to the Amlin stadium this Tuesday night in the revised date for the fixture originally set to be played before Christmas. Braintree turn their attentions back to the league following their Essex Senior cup game, and will be keen to bounce back from their last league loss against Woking, having not had the opportunity to do so since. With Iron just 3 points behind Macclesfield with two games in hand, the sides look evenly  matched going into the fixture, which presents a chance for both to move ever closer to the magic fifty points mark.

The Silkmen will make the 200 mile trip from Cheshire this week with ambitions to move towards the playoffs, but will have to try and do so without their top league goal scorer Conor Jennings. Jennings has netted 14 times in the league this term, proving to be a shrewd loan signing from League Two side Scunthorpe United, but has now returned to his parent club after completing his loan spell early due to injury.

Macclesfield arrive high in confidence, having lost just once in their last six league games. In their last 24, the visitors have won 15, drawn three and lost six in all competitions, seeing them rise from the relegation places to just four points from the playoffs since October. The spell has also seen the Silkmen reach the third round of the FA Cup, where they played out a draw against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday to earn a replay at Hillsborough. Although going out at this stage with a 4-1 loss away from home, the run has provided much needed revenue for the club at a time that it has called upon help to steer it through financially difficult times.

Iron loan signing Barnard Mensah is still awaiting his home debut since joining from Watford. The striker did see some action at Woking after coming on as a substitute, but is yet to tread the Amlin turf due to postponements since his arrival. With a superior goal difference on their side, a win in this fixture would see Alan Devonshire’s side leapfrog Macclesfield Town going into the weekend. The reverse fixture has already been played this season, with Liam Enver-Marum’s goal the only of thing separating the two sides at the Moss Rose in a 1-0 win for Braintree.

This fixture will be a Category B match, priced as follows:

Seats: Adults £16, Concessions £11

Ground: Adults £15, OAPs £10, Under 18s £5, Under 11s £3

Gateshead FC (Home) Preview 25-01-2014

Gateshead will make the long journey down to the Amlin stadium this weekend looking to extend their unbeaten run of eight league games that stretches back to before Christmas. The Wings have got 2014 off to a flyer, adding ten points to their tally so far and knocking in twelve goals in the process.

The Wings currently occupy fourth position, and have strengthened their squad since the turn of the year, displaying their intentions to really push on after finding themselves in with a shout of promotion going into the second half of the campaign. Former Sunderland and Burnley striker Ryan Noble has joined the Wings until the end of the season, and is expected to make an appearance this weekend. Having also spent time on loan at Derby County and Hartlepool United, the 22year old front man brings a wealth of experience for his age, and can play out wide as well as up front. Gary Mills has also added attacking midfielder JJ O’Donnell from title-chasers Luton Town on an initial one month loan.

Iron loan signing Barnard Mensah is still awaiting his home debut since joining from Watford. The striker did see some action at Woking after coming on as a substitute, but is yet to tread the Amlin turf due to postponements since his arrival.

Devonshire’s side currently sit in fourteenth place as they look to get back to league action, nine points adrift of Gateshead with five games in hand. The sides are yet to meet this term, but it is Braintree who have come out on top in recent contests, running out winners last season on both occasions by a single goal. The last meeting saw Sean Marks claim all three points, adding to a Dean Wells volley which had put Braintree ahead until the 85th minute. The Wings looked to have rescued something from the game when Ben Everson struck with just five minutes to play, but an instant reply from Marks saw the visiting Iron take all three points on the road.

This fixture will be a Category B match, priced as follows:

Seats: Adults £16, Concessions £11

Ground: Adults £15, OAPs £10, Under 18s £5, Under 11s £3

Both home and away fans are encouraged to check the club website ahead of this fixture with an early pitch inspection currently scheduled to take place at 10am on Friday morning.

Lincoln City (Home) match preview 18-01-2014

Iron return to league action at the Amlin stadium on Saturday against Lincoln City. The Imps have struggled this season for form, but are unbeaten in the league so far since the turn of the year. Draws against Grimsby and league leaders Luton were superseded by an impressive 4-1 win against Alfreton Town last week to give Lincoln five points from a possible nine. Cambridge United duo Delano Sam-Yorke and Mitch Austin have played their part in helping to steer the Imps in the right direction following their loan moves at the start of the month. Currently this weekend’s visitors sit eight points clear of safety, trailing Braintree by six points and seven places as we make headway into the second half of the season.

Iron have played just one league fixture since an impressive display at the back of last year in which Braintree dominated in a 2-0 victory over Tamworth. This outing came against Woking who claimed all three points in a 1-0 victory that disappointed the Iron gaffer. Alan Devonshire will be looking for a reaction from his side after what he described as “the worst we have played all season”. After having some extra match practice in a victory on Tuesday night in the Essex Senior cup, the team will aim to overcome a physical Lincoln side that claimed a 3-1 victory at the Amlin earlier in the season in the FA Trophy. Sean Marks’ early led was cancelled out by goals from Sharp, Foster and Sheridan for the visitors.

Devonshire’s new addition Bernard Mensah will be hoping to make an appearance after coming on as a substitute against Woking. Mensah has signed on loan from Championship side Watford, and will be looking to take the chance to make his home debut this weekend. Iron may have to do without Chez Isaac, who is a doubt after being carried off last weekend as they look to get back to winning ways in the league after sealing a victory against Harlow Town midweek. This result earned Iron an away semi-final draw against AFC Hornchurch, with the date of the game to be confirmed.

This fixture will be a Category B match, priced as follows:

Seats: Adults £16, Concessions £11

Ground: Adults £15, OAPs £10, Under 18s £5, Under 11s £3

Braintree Town Vs Harlow Town match report 14-01-2014 (Essex Senior cup)

A strong Braintree side was too much for Harlow Town in the Essex Senior cup, winning 3-1 to send Iron into the semi-finals. Six of the starting eleven were also in the side at Woking, but it was substitute Jordan Cox who enjoyed the occasion, coming on in the second half, netting once and winning a penalty which eventually made the difference.

The Iron took the game to their opponents with Holman creating an opening early on, running at the Harlow defence and feeding James Mulley, whose deflected shot spun over the bar. Matt Paine then managed to find a chance when he was left unmarked in the area and met Luke Daley’s cross, but his headed effort flew over as the hosts struggled to break through. For the visitors, Leon Antoine looked lively from the start, happy to run at the iron defence. He was the first to worry the home side, providing a threatening ball across the box twenty minutes into the game that could not find a teammate to the relief of the backpedalling Irons.

It was Alex Read who was to open the scoring in this cup tie, drilling in a low effort which added to his impressive tally for the season. The travelling fans set off an air raid siren in celebration, which rung out around the Amlin, in keeping with the game which had largely been played in the air with long balls in from both sides. Matt Paine struggled to deal with a ball through from the Hawkes, slipping on the patched up surface and giving away possession. Read made the most of the opportunity, bearing down on goal and slotting the ball into the bottom right hand corner, giving the visitors the lead.

With the Harlow fans in full voice, Exodus Geohaghan looked to instantly reply through a set piece. The big centre back made full use of his height when he met a corner in from Luke Daley, directing his header straight down the goalkeeper’s throat who held onto the ball to ease the pressure. A series of volleys set Dan Holman up, as Luke Daley crossed from the right hand side to Holman, who got over the ball with his attempt, but still couldn’t keep his shot down enough to test James May.

Leon Antoine continued to provide the Hawks with opportunities, setting up Read and crossing into Smith as the visitors looked to extend their lead. Down the other end, James Mulley ran at the Harlow defence, and it looked as if Layne Eadie was going to open the scoring for the home side as he slid in to cut out the ball across. His blushes were saved with what was to be a good defensive block in the end, putting the ball behind for a corner. It was Kenny Davis who opened the scoring for the Iron just before half time, beating several challenges to get his shot in on goal which rolled into the Harlow net to equalise.

Dan Holman managed to find James Mulley with a through ball when the teams returned from the break, who cut in and saw his shot bundled out for a corner. Jordan Cox managed to make an instant impact when he received a throw deep inside the Harlow half from James Mulley. Cox twisted and turned to get himself into a shooting position, curling an out swinging shot at goal which nestled into the side netting to give Devonshire’s side the lead.

Quinton almost added a third when one of his many in swinging corners teetered in front of the goal line, but an orange shirt could not connect and the marginal lead remained as the clock ticked down. Alex Reid did find himself with chances in what were becoming rare attacks for the Hawks. He set up teammate Leon Antoine who drilled an effort at Nathan McDonalds left post, but the keeper got down well to turn the ball out for a corner.

Ben Long picked up a loose ball midway in the Harlow half and ran into space, laying off Jordan Cox who again tried a curling effort. This time he couldn’t add to the scoring with May getting a hand on the shot and palming the effort away. Jordan Cox was again in the thick of the action as he ran onto a through ball, bearing down on the Harlow goalkeeper. Darren Williams brought Cox down in the box with just minutes to go, earning a red card as he got nowhere near the ball sending the lofty striker sprawling. Sean Marks stepped up for the spot kick and made it count, sending James May the wrong way, slotting into the bottom right hand corner to finish the visitors off.

Harlow Town match preview 14-01-2014 FA Senior Cup

The Amlin Stadium stages the quarter final of the Essex Senior cup on Tuesday night, where we welcome Harlow Town of the Ryman Division One North. With Alan Devonshire publically apologising for the team’s performance during the 1-0 loss against Woking at the weekend, a strong line-up is expected to face an in form Harlow side.

Harlow currently sit in third position in their division, and are in great form having lost just once in their last eighteen games in all competitions. The run has included victories over higher ranked opposition including Kingstonian and Southend United. The Hawks will take great confidence from the latter win, which also took place in this competition in October.

Harlow’s artificial surface beat the weather in the fourth round, allowing them to qualify for the quarter finals with a 1-0 win over Redbridge. A single Alexander Read goal was enough to set up the tie against Braintree who had a more troubled route to the round. Read will be keen to add to his tally again having enjoyed great success in front of goal so far this term. He is currently the highest goal scorer in his division, and will be one to watch as he aims to cause problems for the Iron defence.

Braintree’s fourth round fixture required two trips to Barking before a place in the quarter finals was awarded due to floodlight failure. Reis Farley-Hearn and Luke Daley hit the net in the first attempt, with Iron 2-1 to the good when the match was plunged into darkness and time was called seventeen minutes early. One week later, Farley-Hearn had reinstated his goal with another strike to put Braintree 1-0 to the good. The tie looked in doubt again when a thick fog did its best to allow Barking a third crack of the whip, covering the pitch to almost completely remove visibility. With only stoppage time left to play, the game was allowed to continue and Braintree held onto the win.

Admission for this match will be at a reduced rate of just £8 for adults, £5 for OAPs and £3 for Under 16s. The Semi-final draw will take place after the game today with Colchester United Vs Thurrock and AFC Hornchurch Vs Dagenham and Redbridge the other games to take place. Concord Rangers have already qualified for the Semi-finals, having beaten Canvey Island 4-0.

Braintree Town Vs Woking match report 11/01/2014

A single goal was all that could separate the two sides at the Kingfield stadium in a tough battle on a difficult surface for the Iron. Joe McNerney struck for the Cards in the second half, connecting with a vacant ball that the Irons failed to clear from a Woking corner. McNerney took full advantage of a scrappy spell in the game, tapping from just yards out which would be enough for the home side to take all three points.

Some recent poor weather had taken its toll on the surface in Surrey, with sand and mud covering the pitch almost as much as the soggy grass in patches. The away dugout had also been a victim of the elements, reportedly ripped apart by the wind leaving Devonshire and his bench out in the cold for this one.

Nic Hamann was called into action early on as Josh Payne picked up a loose ball just outside the Braintree box. Striking hard and low, the best was demanded from an outstretched keeper who did well to prevent an early lead for Woking. The Iron’s first attack led to a corner, which could be cleared only as far as Chez Isaac. His attempt soared well over the bar into the one towering stand at the Kingfield stadium, which was doing a job of blocking the blinding midwinter sunshine.

Woking started to retain possession as they settled into the game, creating a good chance to go in front when Betsy tore down the Iron’s left hand side in a quick attack for the Cards. His attempted chip from an acute angle eventually flew well wide, much to the relief of Devonshire’s men. Up the other end, Dan Holman took a lofted clearance down with one touch, but could not do enough to test Beasant between the sticks as his attempt sailed wide.

The Iron took every opportunity to counter attack, which presented Sean Marks with an opportunity as he sprinted into the Woking box, but Marks failed to get his shot on target and really test the goalkeeper. Chez Isaac suffered a gashed head in the centre circle, sitting out five minutes of the game towards the end of the first half, returning bandaged up before the break. As the Cards broke down the Braintree right hand side, Mike Cestor was brought down by Ryan Peters who went into the referee’s book for his late challenge. The half ended goalless with Braintree in ascendance as Chez Isaac had the final chance of the first 45, striking over the bar as the referee called time.

The sides returned as the sun set behind Nic Hamann’s goal, and Braintree took the game to their opponents early on. Sean Marks latched onto a lay off by Dan Holman, but scuffed his shot wide of the Woking left post. Dean Wells did well to get in front of a Kevan Betsy effort which was rifled at the Iron goal having cut in from the right hand side. Hamann was called into action as Keiran Murtagh twisted and turned in the box, with the Iron Keeper putting the ball out for a corner with his foot. The resulting ball in could not be cleared, and bobbled around the box before being pounced on by Murtagh. From just a few yards out, Murtagh made the most of Braintree’s poor defending, smashing the ball into the back of the net to put the home side ahead on the hour mark.

Newton hit an effort hard and low to Hamanns left from 30 yards out, with the keeper doing well to hold onto the ball as the Iron soaked up more pressure from Woking. Massey was next to show his defensive bravery as he threw himself in front of a Woking effort, which were becoming more and more frequent as the home side began to take control.  Braintree were not without their chances, and continued to counter, with Isaac winning a free kick just inside his own half. The long ball in was chested down to Alan Massey, who couldn’t hit the target and fired over the bar.

As the home side broke again, Dan Wells’ block trickled out to Josh Paine, whose effort was sent slightly wide as the home side looked to extend their lead. Alan Massey kept his side in it with a perfectly timed tackle on Keva Betsy, who carried the ball into the Braintree box and was seconds from pulling the trigger when Massey robbed him to keep the deficit to just one.

Braintree had some decent play down the right hand side, with Jordan Cox getting his head on a searching ball in. The substitute’s effort beat Beasant who was off of his line, and hit the back of the net. However, the travelling celebrations were halted early when the referee gave a free kick to the Cards for a push by Cox.

Mulley stole the ball in the middle of the pitch and carried the ball alone into the Woking box, shooting with the outside of his right boot which was scooped up by Sam Beasant. Mensah had an effort in injury time which flew over the bar, summing up the afternoon for Braintree. The final whistle came with the score line 1-0 to send the Iron home empty handed in a hard fought battle against a solid Woking side.

Alan Devonshire couldn’t hide his discontent after the game saying “We were poor, and I just have to apoologise to the fans because we were poor. I’m really disappointed and I’m gutted, because that’s our worst performance by far. For 90minutes we were poor today, but we still had our chances.”

Woking (away) match preview 11/01/2014

The Iron travel to Surrey this Saturday to take on Woking, who currently sit in eighteenth place. With fixtures up and down the country suffering from the recent poor weather, both clubs have been heavily effected with postponements, so will be glad to have a chance to get back into the action. Subsequently, both Braintree and Woking now have up to six games in hand over some of their competitors.

Braintree go into the weekend still looking to build upon their 2-0 win that came before the New Year against Tamworth, where they put in a dominant performance from start to finish. James Mulley and Ryan Peters struck at the Amlin stadium to see out the year in style, with Devonshire’s men left wanting for the opportunity to duplicate the performance since.

Woking will have had almost a fortnight between games by the time they return to the pitch on Saturday, with their last game being played on Boxing Day. Here the cards suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Salisbury, who ended a five match winless run after Jake Marriott put the home side ahead early on. Prior to this fixture, Garry Hill’s men had won three league fixtures in a row. They will now have to try and replicate this form without the help of Jake Marriott and Scott Rendell, who have completed their loan spells returning to Ipswich Town and Luton Town respectively.

The sides have locked horns already this season, which took place just a few days after the opening day on a Tuesday evening at the Amlin stadium. It was the Iron that took all three points in a 2-0 win, with both goals coming within three minutes. Braintree opened the scoring when Dan Holman connected with a Kenny Davis cross just six yards out. Sean Marks doubled the advantage by latching onto a ball played in by Matt Paine which sealed the victory for the Iron. Woking’s day got even worse as they were reduced to ten men when substitute Giuseppe Sole was dismissed for a rash challenge in injury time.

The ground is situated on the A247, opposite the entrance to Woking Park, midway between the town centre and Old Woking. Leave the M25 at either junctions 10 (Wisley) or 11 (Chertsey) and follow the signs towards Woking. When nearing the town center follow the brown signs showing Heathside car park. The ground is about 15 minutes' walk from the car park. Come out of the car park and follow the signs for Woking FC (the first route described below for rail travellers). Travelling supporters are requested to use Heathside car park as there are no parking areas around Kingfield Stadium.

Woking have advised that cars parking in Westfield Avenue have been issue with parking tickets. This also applies to cars parking on the grass verge near the ground. With recent games being postponed, we advise checking the club website before setting off on Saturday in case of any possible disruptions.

Welling United (away) preview 04/01/13

The Iron travel to thirteenth placed Welling United this weekend looking to build upon their recent league victory against Tamworth. The sides look evenly matched going into the game, just four points apart as things stand.

The Wings are quickly becoming accustomed to life in the Conference Premier after gaining promotion form the Conference South as Champions last season. However, the sides are no strangers having already met twice this season. The Iron enjoyed a 3-0 win in the FA Trophy with Dan Holman, Sean Marks and Jordan Cox all on the score sheet in November. However, it was Welling that stole the points at the Amlin Stadium, scoring the majority in a five goal showdown where again Cox netted, this time joined by Charlie Strutton.

Welling look to bounce back from a 3-1 loss against Aldershot, as like the Iron, they have suffered from the heavy rain which has meant that their last fixture was called off.  A disrupted festive period also saw the Wings pick up a point against Wrexham, and a win against Dartford. Providing a boost to the Welling side will be Bailey Cargill, who has just seen his loan period from Bournemouth extended. He will now link up with Welling player/manager and former Bournemouth midfielder Jamie Day until the end of the month.

Welling have announced that a pitch inspection has been scheduled to take place ahead of the fixture at 10am. Braintree fans making the journey are advised to check the outcome of this tomorrow morning, which will be announced on the Welling United website and updated here as we hear more.
